Exhibited: R.A. 1941

This is possibly a self portrait dating to around the time that Grace married the painter Francis Wheatley (1912). Despite its early-twentieth-century date, the sitter in this painting looks distinctly anachronistic for a year around 1910. The silhouette formed by her clothes is outmoded and the dress material does not accord with contemporary fashion.
Francis Wheatley's portrait of Grace of 1912 is altogether more stylish, though again the sitter appears slightly reticent.

The China Cupboard clearly had significance for the artist -  it was submitted by her at the RA in 1941 some 30 years after it was painted.

A contemporaneous painting in the Tate (Seated Woman) shows the artist's sister who appears to be the same model for a later painting of a reclining nude.
