Albert de Belleroche:
An Allegory of Painting, 1880's
Unframed (ref: 9214)
Oil on canvas
21 5/8 x 27 1/4 in. (55.5 x 69.2 cm)
Provenance: Julie de Belleroche; William de Belleroche; Private collection
This early oil by Albert de Belleroche, probably completed whilst he was working in the atelier of Carolus Duran, shows three women in a studio, one clearly a painter, the other seated reading and the third with a Mandolin at her feet. The composition is almost certainly intended to be read as an Allegory of the Arts: painting, literature, and music.
